Xhiro in Albania
I’m in the largest city in Albania, and the capital Tirana. The main square is Skanderbeg Square and Rinia Park is the central public park. What I found most interesting is an impressive street library, where you can pick up a book on your leisurely stroll of the city.
In addition to grabbing a book and reading it in the park, I asked what a popular means was of promoting good mental health and wellbeing in Albania and I was told it is social walking otherwise known as ‘xhiro walking.’ Xhiro means ‘walk’ in the Albanian language.
Xhiro walking is an evening social activity where people go for a walk at sunset or directly after sunset. Albanians tend to walk every evening and it’s something that people can do that doesn’t cost a lot. It can be walking by the lake or on the sidewalk next to the road or packed roadways. Xhiro is often done in groups of friends and it’s also a perfect way to meet people even someone who you could potentially date. It’s time to start a xhiro near you!
